Watchout for GSATA

April 10th, 2014

So I have been slowing building up this nice 8 core system and have had no end of trouble getting it to boot some Linux distributions and specifically 64bit Linux of the Fedora and Mandriva varieties. Live disks would throw all kinds of errors and eventually dump to a commandline instead off X Windows.

I was sure it was the Asus blue ray drive or cheap DVD-R media. But it wasn’t.

I won’t go into just how I figured it out finally but I had unknowingly plugged the optical drives into these 2 stand along SATA ports that turned out to be GSATA. What the heck is GSATA???

Apparently GSATA != SATA.

So, I moved the optical drives onto the main group of Intel SATA controller ports and what do you know – all those “bad” DVD’s boot just fine.

I would conservatively estimate this has cost me about 6 hours over the past 2 months so this isn’t an inexpensive discovery. Hopefully this post will save someone else from wasting their time.

Oklahoma Cop Shoots, Kills Family’s Dog, Says it Was ‘Awesome’

March 24th, 2014

There seems to be a rampant pussification going on in police circles. Badges, guns, egos and ignorance always make for a bad mix and I suppose in some ways we’re fortunate that this lunacy is mostly coming at the cost of family pets instead of children though parents, children and especially unarmed homeless seem to be not that far behind. Anyway a more recent entry in the COPS ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS category comes from Ardmore, Oklahoma where apparently shooting a family’s dog is ‘Awesome’.

Over militarized pencil necked pussies. And these are the only folks “professional enough” to be allowed to have guns? …are we not yet understanding why that’s a bad idea?

Obama to Kill Tomahawk, Hellfire Missile

March 24th, 2014

If you’re going to let Chuck Hagel reduce our troop strength you’d think we’d at least keep up on our remote control weaponry but apparently our current administration is continuing on its quest to neuter the United States and is now cutting the Tomahawk and Hellfire.

Remember that nature abhors a vacuum and that applies equally to geopolitics.

Lacking Moral Equivalency

March 24th, 2014

To say that Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is no different than Bush fighting in Kuwait, Iraq or Afghanistan is like saying Franklin D. Roosevelt was no better than Adolf Hitler because they both invaded France.

(And, sadly some will believe it of FDR as well)

Global warming will cause widespread conflict, displace millions of people and devastate the global economy

March 18th, 2014

The People’s Indefeasible Rights to Institute Government

March 14th, 2014

“Government is instituted for the common good; for the protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness of the people; and not for profit, honor, or private interest of any one man, family, or class of men; therefore, the people alone have an incontestable, unalienable, and indefeasible right to institute government; and to reform, alter, or totally change the same, when their protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness require it.”

John Adams, Thoughts on Government, 1776

Amazon Accused of Cheating Customers

March 13th, 2014

OK so this woman is accusing Amazon of cheating Prime customers by “encouraging” them to pack shipping charges onto the item price so they can list shipping as free.

First, apparently the nanny state should protect us from our own lack of caveat emptor.

Second, she must have only recently jumped off the turnip truck because this “tactic” predates Amazon and I see it with a number of merchant clearing houses such as EBay and Yahoo! stores.

Personally, I will generally prefer to deal with the guy that lists an item for $49.95 instead of the guy who lists it for $34.95 + $14.95 S&H because I could care less about the components – I want to know how much to MY DOOR. Plus, it seems to be a common ploy to list the shipping separately so your product looks less expensive but when the shipping is added it’s actually more expensive than the vendor priced to include “free” shipping.

Of course, if one way or the other was preferred by a majority there wouldn’t be so many doing it each way now would there. But to sue over it because you can’t comprehend retail is absurd…

Teen Jailed 13 Days … Over A Pocketknife

March 13th, 2014

I can only hope that the Teen Jailed 13 Days Over A Pocketknife isn’t dissuaded from his course of becoming a responsible, productive member of society. But after seeing there is little justice in Justice I wouldn’t blame him for taking a different career path – I mean if a Felony for a pocketknife doesn’t make that choice for him.

Koch Brother Donates Money to Hospital, Liberals Protest

March 10th, 2014

This is Not a Parody but it is rabid lunacy.

As the saying goes no good deed goes unpunished. Fortunately we have people like this who do it anyway.

Union: Obamacare will slash wages by up to $5 an hour | WashingtonExaminer.com

March 9th, 2014

So a union is saying Obamacare will slash wages by up to $5 an hour. I guess this explains the desperate push for a minimum wage increase – someone has to pay for the ACA.

You’d think something like this would ruin the President’s credibility on income inequality but he’s apparently the gold child even when his popularity is as bad as W’s was and it didn’t take him as long or as much media shenanigans to get him there.
